Serum Alpha II released

When I was adding all the Serum Alpha II info to this website, I was slightly taken aback by one bit of information I came across: the date the original Serum Alpha was released. It was November 2021. Can it really have been more than 3 years ago?!

Of course, I’ve released other Serum soundsets since then but, it surprised me it had taken so long for a sequel to the popular Serum Alpha to come about. And it wasn’t for lack of sounds. The Alpha II folder in my Serum presets has been growing steadily since probably the week after the original was released. In fact, by the time it came to putting Alpha II together, I had way more patches than I needed and had to spend some time working out a final 200 for the collection.

One other noteable fact for this release is that, since I finished making all these sounds, Serum 2 has been released! That took me by surprise, I won’t lie.

So, whilst Alpha II was made in Serum 1.3, and doesn’t utilise any of the new features that have been released with Serum 2, all the sounds do at least work in Serum 2, if that’s now your preferred version. No compatibility issues here, thank goodness!

Alpha II follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, bringing together a tight collection of cutting edge sounds, full of dynamism, expression and grit, that really cut through a mix. Again, there’s a real focus on sequenced patches and low end, so we all sorts of basslines, drumloops and pulses included, as well as basses, impacts and sfx. It’s got everything you need for contemporary action scores, whether it’s for the big or small screen.

Plus, it very much wears its inspirations on its sleeves. Tyler Bates’ John Wick scores and Ludwig Goransson’s Tenet have had a major impact on this soundset.

Funnily enough, shortly after having put Alpha II together, I was contacted by a film composer to create some sounds for a new action film score, and guess what two of the main influences for that soundtrack were? Yup… John Wick and Tenet. So, I was much in the right fram of mind for that job!

And, of course, that means there’ll definitely be a Serum Alpha III in the future release pile. Although I’ll want to have spent  a little more time with Serum 2 first, as it will be good to take advantage of some of those very exciting new features for Alpha III.

I’m really excited to be releasing Serum Alpha II. I hope you enjoy it too.
