I can remember back in the late 2000s when I first got into writing film music that I had a number of scores on my iPod to learn from. I’d barely paid attention to soundtracks for years, but having fallen in love with the music of Harry Gregson-Williams, I suddenly felt compelled to devour as many modern ‘hybrid’ film scores as I could.
At the centre of this new found collection were the soundtracks to the Bourne series of films, by John Powell. I already loved the films, but there was something about the almost laidback European groove of the The Bourne Identity music that really struck a chord.
So, nearly a decade on, you can probably imagine my joy at discovering that the latest film in the series has some of my synth sounds in it. This time round, John Powell has teamed up with David Buckley to score Jason Bourne, and it was David who mentioned to me that there were some The Unfinished synth patches lurking in the score somewhere.
I’m not sure I’d have ever imagined such a thing whilst walking to work, glued to my iPod all those years ago.
